Municipal authorities of many cities have decided to install city monitoring systems or will do so in the near future. The advantages of such systems are obvious.
The main problems are caused by extensiveness of the systems - transmission of cameras' images to monitoring center and commands to the cameras (PTZ control).
IP CCTV installations have become the mainstream nowadays. At current stage of IP CCTV there is no problem with transmitting data in central parts of cities, using common Internet infrastructure with adequate bandwidth. But the trouble begins when the system should cover some more isolated locations with limited connectivity.
Then the only feasible solution is doing individual wireless network, using WLAN technology.
Both for transmission of video stream and PTZ commands there can be used access points integrated with antennas, powered with use of PoE technology. There may be employed sector antennas, as well as the system itself can be divided into easily manageable sectors.
Practical potential of WLAN systems
  • wireless access to local networks in homes, offices, businesses etc,
  • wireless access to public hot-spots at airports, stations, in coffee shops etc.
  • point-to-point links (bridging of LANs, telemetry, remote control, remote monitoring)
  • delivery of Internet connectivity (in cities and in the country)
  • additional protection for wired links (critical connectivity applications)
Wireless CCTV monitoring system
IP cameras win the market share battle due to simple installation and configuration. But the distance between buildings is often too large to use standard UTP/FTP cable. An excellent solution to such a problem is wireless transmission based on Raptor family of devices.
The devices are compliant with 802.11a standard and designed for outdoor operation. They are easy to mount. Access points are integrated with antennas, in durable housings resistant to weather conditions. These compact constructions enable the installer to forget about loss of signal in feeding cable or problems with crimping connectors. The devices are powered directly via UTP/FTP cable, using the included PoE adapter. This feature makes the job quicker and easier, as well as allows for placing the equipment on high masts.
All Raptor devices have been equipped with 32 MB memory and powerful Power PC processor from AMCC. The software is based on Linux, with direct access in text mode (telnet, ssh), but less advanced users can also configure the devices in quick and easy way via www interface.
The RPT-23XR N2530 and RPT-19APN N2532 devices can work in AP, APC, bridge, and router modes, the RPT-19NM is used for point-to-point and point-to-multipoint links. RPT-16BS N2536 with integrated sector antenna and RPT-12BO N2538 with integrated omnidirectional antenna are used as base stations. The maximum RF power level is 1 W (30 dBm).
Thanks to high sensitivity of the devices, the equipment can be used for long distances, e.g. as high-capacity wireless bridge.
Adjustment of power and ACK parameters allows to set up links over several kilometers. The devices are highly suitable for extensive WLANs.
Extensive wireless network based on RAPTOR devices
WiFi networks are used not only for creating large computer networks, but also for monitoring a number of distant locations, e.g. with IP cameras. Use the devices shown in the diagram below, working in 5 GHz band with bitrates up to 54 Mbps, ensures 2-3 km distances from the base station equipped with N2538 device with integrated omnidirectional antenna.
As the distant client stations can be used the N2530 devices. The installation process is simplified to the minimum thanks to integration of access point with antenna. It is enough to lead UTP/FTP cable which also delivers power to the device (using PoE adapters). Depending on the needs, we attach any LAN device or IP camera. The diagram is only an example which can be freely extended or modified.

Application of Raptor RPT-16BS N2536, shown in the diagram below, allows to reach distances over 5 km from the base station. As the client stations there can be used the RPT-23XR N2530 devices.
The used IP camera from ACTI - CAM-5320 K1115, due to MPEG-4 ASP (Advanced Simple Profile) compression can provide images at D1 resolution. It employs 1/3' Sony Exview HAD sensor with resolution of 480 TVL. The transmission can be performed at 30 fps (720 x 480 points, NTSC) or 25 fps (720 x 576 points, PAL).
The camera has been equipped with LAN and WAN ports, and QoS function (Quality of Service, IEEE 802.1pQ) enabling full utilization of available bandwidth. It can be controlled manually or adjust the number of transmitted frames adequately to other video steams that are transmitted by the network.
Use of high-speed PTZ IP camera ACTI CAM-6611 K1214 belonging to the new family of devices featuring very good compression algorithms and transmission parameters allows for effective monitoring of large areas and moving objects. It has been equipped with 1/4' Sony Exview image sensor that enables operation even in very low lighting. Pan/Tilt mechanism allows for quick rotation with angular speed up to 4000/s, with 0.2250 resolution. Combining it with powerful optical zoom, the operator gets ideal tool for monitoring a vast area. The housing has been made according to IP66, which enables operation in very tough weather conditions.
